Q. Who is eligible for the UWL Aspire Bursary?

If you are a 2nd or 3rd year full-time home/EU undergraduate student starting a programme in 2017-18  paying the £9,000 fee you should be eligible for the Aspire Bursary*.

*Students studying through partnership arrangements are not eligible for the bursary.

Please note all Foundation and 1st years Undergraduate students in 2017 - 18 will receive a book bundle instead of funds. The bundle will be valued at more than £100 per full time student and more than £50 per part time student.  The book bundle will have all the books needed for the course studied that year.

Please note all Foundation and 1st years Undergraduate students in 2017 - 18 should still collect their Aspire card so their Aspire funds for the following years  can be automatically added when due.

Q. How do I register for the Bursary?

You can register at John Smith’s on the Ealing campus. You can also register online here or come along to our desk during registration at the start of term.

Q. How much money do I get and when do I get it?

Full time students will receive £100 and part time students will receive £50 each year throughout their Undergraduate study (up to 3 years). Eligible students will receive their funds once they have completed registration with the University of West London. The money will be loaded to your Aspire Card.

Q. Is this a loan? Do I have to pay it back?

Your UWL Aspire Bursary is not a loan and you do not have to pay it back. The funds are provided for you by your university to help with the extra costs associated with studying. It does not add to your student debt.

Q. Where can I spend my funds?

You can spend your funds either in store at John Smith’s on the Ealing campus or online here. From time to time John Smith's operates temporary bookstalls at the Paragon House and Fountain House campuses where you can purchase textbooks and learning materials using your Aspire funds..

Q. What happens if I don’t spend my funds by the end of the academic year?

Unspent funds at the end of this year will be rolled over for you to use in your next academic year. You must however remain a registered eligible student. The funds paid in year 2 or 3 will be added to any remaining balance from the previous year.

Q. What can I spend my funds on?

You can spend your funds on books and other learning resources such as tablets and laptops which are available in store or online here.

Q. How secure are my Aspire funds?

John Smith’s has put in place a number of measures to ensure that each student’s Aspire funds are securely protected, so please also note that:

  • No actual funds are held on the card so the loss/theft of a card does not mean that funds are accessible to a 3rd party without the account access protection codes
  • Any physical usage of the account in-store requires the use of an access authentication - i.e. PIN number - plus identification by means of the student ID card
  • For online transactions (if required), a password is created by the student and access to the funds is not possible without this password
  • Additionally, the John Smith’s systems have the ability to put an immediate stop on an account as soon as we are notified that there is any suspicion of loss/theft/fraud
  • If a card is lost or stolen, then accounts can be frozen until such time as the student attends the bookshop and collects a replacement card thus preventing any further activity, either in person or online, on the account until the issue is resolved
  • John Smith’s will charge a nominal fee of £5 for any replacement card
