John Smith & Son (Glasgow) Ltd was founded in 1751 in Glasgow. It is the city’s second oldest trading company and is the oldest bookselling company in the English speaking world. John Smith & Son is now a specialist Academic and Professional bookseller operating over 28 sites in 3 separate countries and is continuing to expand its operations both in the UK and overseas.

We provide top quality university bookshops and currently service the university communities of Aston, Ayr, Cork, Dundee, East London, Glasgow, Glasgow Caledonian, Jordanhill (Strathclyde), London Metropolitan, West of Scotland, Staffordshire, Stirling, Strathclyde and Thames Valley - not to mention the University of Botswana in Southern Africa. We have also introduced a new campus retailing format, comprising books and an extended range of everyday and leisure goods, which is now trading at the universities of Aston, West of Scotland and Greenwich.

Recently we have opened new shops in Sussex University and Queen Mary College, London.

This year we are opening even more with shops at Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford and Cambridge along with a new shop in Wolverhampton University.

Following the acquisition of Hammicks Legal Bookshops in 2003 and the BMJ Bookshop in 2004, we also operate several specialist bookshops including our flagship Hammicks Legal Bookshop in Fleet Street, the Education Bookshop at the Institute of Education, a specialist medical bookshop in Manchester and Hammicks Legal Bookshops in Manchester and the University of Strathclyde.
